Sauron […] was only less evil than his master in that for long he served another and not himself.”  J. R. R. Tolkien.

Mairon, originally a servant of Aulë, was the most trusted
companion of Morgoth during the events of the First Age. All of Morgoth’s
horrors during that time, Mairon partook in. After the fall of his master,
Mairon continued to terrorize and conquer Middle Earth during the Second and
Third Age. His notable atrocities were the Fall of  Númenor,
and the deception of the elves of Eregion, under the disguise of Annatar,
leading to the creation of the One Ring. Mairon was finally defeated at the end
of the Third Age, when the One Ring was destroyed by Frodo Baggins and Samwise
Gamgee.

Mairon, during the Third Age, was known by the name of
Sauron.
